The Southeast’s power grid is facing a turning point. Data centers are moving in faster than utilities can plan for, manufacturing growth is ramping up, and electrification is accelerating at a pace the system wasn’t built to handle. The result: growing pressure on transmission and distribution, tighter reliability margins, and a constant scramble to keep the lights on for both large industrial customers and everyday residents.

Utilities are asking the same question: how do we keep the grid reliable, affordable, and resilient while adapting to this new wave of demand? Traditional approaches are no longer enough. Planning cycles that used to take years are being compressed, and procurement strategies, grid investments, and operational tactics all need to be rethought.

Cancellations must be received on or before August 07, 2026 in order to be refunded and will be subject to a US $295.00 processing fee per registrant. No refunds will be made after this date. Cancellations received after this date will create a credit of the tuition (less processing fee) good toward any other EUCI event. This credit will be good for six months from the cancellation date. In the event of non-attendance, all registration fees will be forfeited. In case of conference cancellation, EUCIs liability is limited to refund of the event registration fee only. A key benefit emerges during major weather events, where reducing the number of outage locations enables faster crew deployment and more efficient system restoration. Recent storms have already shown restoration workload reductions of approximately 30%, with modeled outcomes suggesting potential improvements of up to 50% at full buildout.

Using EMT Modeling to De-Risk Grid Integration of Data Centers and SMRs

As the grid changes, static planning models increasingly miss how the system behaves under real world conditions, which is why dynamic, EMT-level analysis is becoming essential rather than optional. Under DOE's Office of Electricity Advanced Grid Modeling Program, we're building a large-scale Electro-Magnetic Transient model of South Carolina's transmission grid. As more data centers connect, with their large, fast-swinging load profiles, that dynamic behavior only intensifies, and steady-state tools simply can't keep up. That same EMT foundation is what lets us evaluate interconnection points with real fidelity, giving utilities a physics-informed way to plan and position SMR integration before committing capital, exactly the kind of de-risking this audience needs.

Storm Response and Affordability: How Utilities Can Revolutionize Their Storm Response Programs with the Ratepayer at the Center

Storm restoration costs are rising as infrastructure ages and weather grows more severe, and many costs spent on storm response may be passed to consumers. This session examines how utilities can improve their storm response process by combining high-definition weather prediction insights and granular storm damage predictions to eliminate over- and under-resourcing, minimize aggregator markup, reduce mobilization and de-mobilization costs, and perform procurement decisions based on quality and unit costs. Attendees will learn how these approaches work together to control storm costs without sacrificing restoration speed or safety. Takeaway: disciplined investment in people, process, and technology lower storm costs; what utilities save, consumers save.
