“Professor Attanayake made this course a great experience. He considered every attendee and helped with the understanding for everyone, despite the differences in everyone’s background/experience level.” Engineer in Training, RockSol Consulting Group
Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) incorporates innovative planning, design, design materials, and construction methods. ABC reduces costs, construction time, and road user impacts, minimizing traffic delays and community disruption while increasing safety in construction.
This course will cover the concepts, decision-support tools for choosing ABC for a given site, and many examples covering ABC techniques. This also includes a case study of the first network arch bridge project using ABC techniques.
Attendees will learn about:
*Previous experience with bridge replacement design, installation, or inspection is not required

Welcome, Introduction, and Course Overview
Prefabricated Bridge Elements and Systems (PBES) are manufactured offsite and then transported and assembled at the bridge construction site. Due to the manner in which they are developed and installed, prefabricated systems require innovative planning, engineering design, and high-performance material. This section will examine the benefits of employing prefabricated bridge elements, precast construction fundamentals, precast technology and bridge design, and the most frequently used prefabricated elements in accelerated bridge construction.
The conventional methods of bridge construction are still being followed on many projects. Most projects requiring early completion will make limited, if not total, use of Accelerated Bridge Construction techniques, depending on the results of the site inspection and project surveys, studies, and reports. This section will discuss factors influencing the final determination of the appropriate bridge construction methods for each project, including project schedule, environmental issues, project cost, and site conditions.
Evaluation and Adjournment
Upul Attanayake, Ph.D., P.E., is the Presidential Innovation Professor in the Department of Civil & Construction Engineering at Western Michigan University. Upul has conducted several short courses on finite element basics and bridge structural analysis using commercially available finite element software programs, accelerated bridge construction, pre-stressed bridge analysis and design, steel girder bridge analysis and design, and non-destructive testing. He has worked on Michigan DOT-sponsored research projects evaluating bridge structural system performance, concrete durability, accelerated bridge construction techniques, and structural performance through instrumentation and nondestructive testing.
