Staff Attorney, SELCThe Southeast’s power grid is facing a turning point. Data centers are moving in faster than utilities can plan for, manufacturing growth is ramping up, and electrification is accelerating at a pace the system wasn’t built to handle. The result: growing pressure on transmission and distribution, tighter reliability margins, and a constant scramble to keep the lights on for both large industrial customers and everyday residents.
Utilities are asking the same question: how do we keep the grid reliable, affordable, and resilient while adapting to this new wave of demand? Traditional approaches are no longer enough. Planning cycles that used to take years are being compressed, and procurement strategies, grid investments, and operational tactics all need to be rethought.
The Southeast Power & Energy Summit is built to discuss these challenges:
The Summit is about practical, actionable strategies for keeping the Southeast grid reliable, modern, and ready for the next wave of demand, whether from AI-driven data centers, industrial growth, or everyday electrification.
Join us this September in Raleigh, North Carolina.

This keynote sets the stage by examining the structural shift in electricity demand across the Southeast and what it means for the future of the grid. It focuses on how long-term demand trends are changing the definition of “normal” planning conditions and why traditional expansion approaches are no longer sufficient for the scale of change ahead.
Peter Ledford North Carolina Board Certified Specialist in Utilities Law Ward and Smith, PA
This session focuses on the operational and planning constraints utilities are now facing as demand accelerates. It examines where traditional planning assumptions are breaking down—particularly around fuel availability, reserve margins, and cost escalation pressures.
Matt Abele Executive Director North Carolina Sustainable Energy Association
Jennifer Mundt Assistant Secretary of Clean Energy Economic Development North Carolina Department of Commerce
Findlay Salter Deputy Director, Energy Planning and Emerging Technologies South Carolina Office of Regulatory Staff
This session explores how different market structures and regional coordination models handle capacity, transmission planning, and resource adequacy under stress. It focuses on what the Southeast can learn from organized markets and where structural differences create unique challenges.
Sumit Brar Manager MISO
This session focuses on the decision-making frameworks behind grid investment and procurement. It examines how regulatory structures and planning processes are adapting to faster load growth and more complex resource portfolios.
Jamie Barber Director, Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Unit Georgia Public Service Commission
This case study will examine the development of the Lewis Ridge project as an example of how new generation resources are being planned and executed to meet large and rapidly growing load requirements. The discussion will focus on siting and permitting challenges, transmission and interconnection constraints, and the decision-making process behind resource mix selection, including gas, storage, and hybrid configurations. The session will also highlight key lessons for replicating large-load development across the Southeast under evolving grid and market conditions.
Bree Wilson, PE, PMP Vice President - Development Rye Development
This session explores the design and execution of a large-scale undergrounding program that has converted more than 3,000 miles of overhead lines to underground infrastructure, with a planned total of 4,000 miles. The program has significantly improved reliability for customers across converted and downstream areas while strengthening overall grid resilience.
A key benefit emerges during major weather events, where reducing the number of outage locations enables faster crew deployment and more efficient system restoration. Recent storms have already shown restoration workload reductions of approximately 30%, with modeled outcomes suggesting potential improvements of up to 50% at full buildout.

Raleigh, NC
This keynote will examine how the Southeast can move beyond incremental planning approaches to meet the scale and speed of today’s demand growth. In addition to addressing reliability and affordability pressures, it will explore how utilities and regulators are beginning to rethink planning timelines, investment sequencing, and coordination across jurisdictions. The discussion will also highlight emerging approaches such as proactive infrastructure development, more dynamic load forecasting, and the role of faster interconnection and permitting pathways in reducing system bottlenecks.
Tricia Pridemore Commissioner Georgia Public Service Commission
This session will explore how utilities and regulators are addressing the challenges of integrating large industrial loads, including data centers, into the grid while maintaining fair and sustainable rate structures. The discussion will focus on tariff design, interconnection and network upgrade cost allocation, and ongoing concerns around cross-subsidization between customer classes. Panelists will also examine the balance between protecting existing ratepayers and supporting economic development in a period of rapid load growth.
