The Challenges of Developing Transmission Line Infrastructure in Urban Areas: A Northern Virginia Perspective

Dominion Energy currently is experiencing one of the fastest load growth rates of any utility in the country, particularly in northern Virginia. This demand for energy is due to accelerated growth associated with the area’s role as one of the world’s leading innovation and technology hubs.  Many of the counties in northern Virginia with the greatest energy needs are urbanized, however, with limited space for new infrastructure. This presentation will examine the challenges associated with routing, permitting, and acquiring easements for transmission line projects in urban areas in northern Virginia.
