Electric Distribution Fundamentals

January 14 - 15, 2025 Online :: Central Time

“I’m an engineer who has been out of school for a decade and was looking for a class to refresh my memory on power systems fundamentals. Jerry did a fantastic job doing just that!” Sr. Professional Services Consultant, NISC

“Very nice introductory course for folks new into the distribution industry or a great refresher for staff that hasn’t been using these concepts on a daily basis.” Team Lead, NISC

“Jerry was fantastic – a perfect blend of educating and engaging.  It’s amazing how much we were able to learn in a day and a half.” Lead Analyst, NV5 Geospatial

Electric Distribution is unique to the Power Delivery System in that it is the portion closest to the end user. Traditionally, these lines have been radial in nature. Equipment and line construction must be compact to accommodate smaller right of ways, maintain adequate clearances and sturdy enough to withstand the weather-related forces. This course will expose attendees to the equipment, construction practices and protection techniques associated with electric distribution systems. It is intended for those new to this field, regardless of organizational position.

Learning Objectives

  • Discuss the position of Electric Distribution in the Power Delivery System
  • Review the basics of both Overhead and Underground Distribution Systems Equipment
    • Construction Practices Advantages & Disadvantages
  • Review Line Sectionalizing for Isolating Faults Equipment
    • Types of Faults
    • Coordinating Protective Devices
  • Discuss an introduction to the National Electric Safety Code
  • Discuss an introduction to Distribution Reliability and Power Quality
