This course provides guidelines for management and maintenance of substation primary equipment such as Load Tap Changers (LTC), Transformers, Breakers, etc. We will cover multiple technologies used to monitor primary equipment assets and cover in detail the various analytic tools available to utilities to determine the current and future health of their assets. We will also look at emerging technologies such as thermal imaging and artificial intelligence (AI) which have the promise of predicting failure more accurately in a faster time frame while at the same time being a lower cost alternative.  This course will provide useful and applicable knowledge that can be used by attendees in their everyday functions.

  • Review the benefits of substation asset management
  • List various types of failures and monitoring analytics for load tap changes
  • Describe the meaning of transformer moisture in oil analysis and detection methods
  • Explain impacts of and detection methods for transformer dissolved gas & partial discharge analysis

  • Describe breaker failure modes and the benefit of the analysis from protection relays
  • Explore the asset management of other substation equipment and components
  • Review what AI and IR are and how they can be used to detect failures

Instructors

Ken Caird, Chief Technology Officer, VNCTech Group

Ken has over 35 years’ experience in the Electric Utility automation field. He started his career as a Protection & Control engineer at a major Canadian Utility, where he was responsible for the design and installation of EMS and SCADA Systems, and communication networks as well as protection automation. After 15 years at the utility Ken became Director of R&D at a substation automation start up that became the #1 supplier of substation automation products in North America. After the company grew to $80 million dollars it was acquired by General Electric.

At GE, Ken was responsible for the high-level systems design for GE’s Smart Grid System offering. This includes interoperability requirements between GE’s products used in Smart Grid solutions and legacy systems used by GE’s utility customers. Ken was also responsible for developing requirements and working with external System Integrators to provide interoperability between utility real time network operational systems and IT based enterprise systems.  Ken specializes in Substation & Distribution Automation Projects. Can has worked with several major North American Utilities including AEP in optimizing their Volt/VAR performance.

Ken was the U.S. national country representative on the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) Standards Management Board (SMB) Smart Grid (SG) #3. The SMB SG#3 is responsible for the recommendation of existing standards to be used in Smart Grid projects, identifying gaps in existing standards and identifying new standards required to fully allow interoperability amongst vendor products. Ken is also leading the IEC SMB SG#3 Architecture Task Team developing a database linking Smart Grid business and architectural requirements to IEC standards.

Ken is on the Board of Directors for Light The World which is a non-profit organization brining electricity to 3rd World and remote communities.

Cancellation Policy

Your registration may be transferred to a member of your organization up to 24 hours in advance of the event. Cancellations must be received on or before November 06, 2020 in order to be refunded and will be subject to a US $195.00 processing fee per registrant. No refunds will be made after this date. Cancellations received after this date will create a credit of the tuition (less processing fee) good toward any other EUCI event. This credit will be good for six months from the cancellation date. In the event of non-attendance, all registration fees will be forfeited. In case of conference cancellation, EUCIs liability is limited to refund of the event registration fee only.
