Pipeline Integrity Management (PIM) is the cradle-to-grave approach of understanding and operating pipelines in a safe, reliable manner. PIM programs are systems managed by pipeline owner-operators that consider all stages of the pipeline life cycle, from conception, to engineering and design, construction, operation, inspection, and finally to repair/replacement when necessary.

In the United States, pipeline operators are required to abide by regulations put forth by the federal Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), at a minimum. Among other things, these regulations require all oil & gas transmission companies to perform regular baseline evaluations of pipelines in areas where pipeline failure would have a significant impact on public safety or the environment.

 Pipeline integrity is at the forefront of focus for operators when taking steps to mitigate and minimize potential pipeline failure. However, it can be difficult to decipher which concepts are effective or unwarranted. The workshop aims to provide participants with an understanding of how to implement PIMS in order to better identify, understand and control risks posed to pipelines.

TK Akins, Principal Integrity Consultant, G2-Integrated Solutions

TK Akins is a Senior Integrity Consultant for G2 Integrated Solutions. He has many years of project management experience, and over the course of his career has focused on systematically driving the continuous improvement of integrity management strategies for several gas and liquid operators. His experience in asset integrity ranges from inline inspection, internal & external risk-based inspections (RBI) optimization and developing and executing reliability programs. He has supported various integrity projects including Integrity assessments, maximum allowable operating pressure (MAOP/MOP) verification projects, integrity management program maintenance and development, and provided general advice and interpretation of ASME B31.3, B31.4, B31.8S and regulations 49 CFR Parts 192, 193 and 195. Most recently, TK worked for Pinnacle Advanced Reliability Technologies as a Client Solutions Engineer, where he focused primarily on developing mechanical integrity, inspections, and reliability programs for clients in the oil and gas, chemicals, and process industries.

Bernardo Cuervo, Principal Integrity Consultant (ILI), G2-Integrated Solutions

Bernardo Cuervo is a Pipeline Integrity Consultant for G2 Integrated Solutions with over 30 years of experience in various engineering, asset integrity, and project management roles within the pipeline integrity industry. Specific areas of expertise are: ILI data analysis, fitness for purpose analysis, pipeline design, pipeline construction, hydrostatic testing, and cathodic protection. Currently, Bernardo leads the ILI discipline within the Asset Integrity Group. In this role, Bernardo is responsible for all ILI projects from feasibility to tool selection, data quality verification, run comparisons, advanced data analysis, corrosion growth and remaining life calculations. In addition to ILI, Bernardo supports MAOP confirmation projects through the application of TVC procedures and verification of pressure test attributes for natural gas and other gas pipelines.

Al Giordano, P.E., Senior Regulatory Consultant, G2-Integrated Solutions

Al Giordano is a licensed professional engineer with several years of experience in the energy industry and a focus on DOT regulatory compliance, regulatory audits, project management, and integrity management. As a member of the Regulatory Compliance team at G2-IS, Al is focused on pipeline compliance consulting with a specialization in inspections, audit support, program development, management, and maintenance. Al has developed regulatory consulting solutions for multiple clients, directly supporting the implementation and maintenance of their regulatory programs, jurisdictional determinations, integrity management, and overall regulatory compliance readiness. Al has served as an inspector with the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) Southwest Region office. As a PHMSA inspector, Al led federal inspections of new construction pipeline projects, integrated inspections, operator qualification inspections, and control room inspections of both gas and hazardous liquid pipelines.

Terry Strahan, Manager- GIS, G2-Integrated Solutions

Terry is accountable for providing strategic generation of innovative business opportunities for new and existing clients while optimizing resource utilization. His role centers around advanced technical geospatial consulting to pipeline integrity, engineering, regulatory compliance and field services clients. Terry has over 30+ years in employing GIS solutions at multiple levels within the oil and gas industry. His background includes experience in software development for multiple facets encompassing field data collection software, real-time data analysis with automated QC and Inline Inspection (ILI) tracking. He submitted, and had accepted, the very first digital GIS Pipeline Reconciliation Dossier for Rule 2 submission to the Texas Railroad Commission. He led the industry in developing and delivering one of the first functional systems to successfully integrate GIS and CADD for 100% data reconciliation. Additionally, he designed and developed the first web-based platform for pipeline tracking, an early precursor to what exists in the market today.

Tracy Thorleifson, Vice President—Software, G2 Integrated Solutions

Tracy has an extensive background in petroleum and pipeline industry data, business process, and physical process modeling. He is a founding member of the Pipeline Open Data Standard (PODS) organization and has served PODS in various roles. As President of Eagle Information Mapping (EIM), now a G2 Integrated Solutions company, he served the organization on the PODS for ESRI Spatial workgroup team and helped define the company’s technology direction. He also managed a variety of software and services projects for Eagle clients worldwide.

At G2-IS, Tracy has led diverse teams of software developers and GIS specialists, providing technical expertise and managing projects and clients in both specialties. He’s a valuable resource in these fields, as he brings extensive first-hand knowledge of GIS database development in order to provide solutions for data migration and catalog to satisfy and exceed the client’s needs.

Prior to his tenure at EIM, Tracy worked for Shell Oil Company as an exploration geologist and researcher, always with an interest in computer mapping applications. As a Research Manager at Shell, Tracy was responsible for helping oversee the introduction of ESRI GIS technology into the company. As Research Director, Tracy supervised the design, development and implementation of a corporate level, GIS-based, interactive mapping system encompassing Shell’s worldwide cartographic, seismic and well data.

Mr. Thorleifson earned a Master of Science in Geology from Arizona State University in 1984. He also currently serves as a lecturer in the University of Houston’s Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, where he teaches the course: Advanced GIS for Geologists.

Mark Treybig, P.E., Vice President, Engineering, G2-Integrated Solutions

Mark has over 37 years of engineering roles and experience. In his current role, he oversees the engineering team, develops and leads integrity projects from the conceptual stage, offers engineering and technical writing expertise, and ensures regulatory compliance throughout his team’s work based on DOT, PHMSA, ASME, and API Standards. Mark has extensive experience in the design and reconstruction of offshore production and compression platforms in the Gulf of Mexico and Louisiana state waters and oversaw the construction and installation of a 1 BCF gas treatment facility in the East Texas region. Treybig performed conceptual design studies for several water and gas gathering and distribution pipeline systems and gas compression facilities for several different clients. He also reorganized and oversaw the final engineering and construction of a salt dome leaching facility expansion, the design and installation of several compressor packages, the construction and installation of a 12,000 ft. offshore living quarters, and the reconstruction of a 13-platform oilfield in the Gulf of Mexico.
