Improving Road Safety with Pervious Pavements

Pavement surface characteristics play a vital role on the safety of road users. In comparison to traditional pavements, pervious pavements provide better surface characteristics in terms of improved friction resistance (skid resistance); reduced potential for hydroplaning in wet weather; reduced water splash, reduced nighttime wet pavement glare and provide better visibility of pavement markings especially on wet nights.

To achieve the specified benefits, the construction of pervious pavements utilizes a special mixture with an open gradation, comprising of mainly coarse aggregate with very little fine aggregates. This creates a porous mixture with higher air voids and improved friction characteristics.

This webinar targets civil engineers working in transportation and infrastructure sector, having limited knowledge on design and maintenance of pervious pavements. The webinar provides the basic understanding types of pervious pavements, benefits, and challenges in performance. The webinar also highlights the design, construction and maintenance practices of pervious pavements.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Define pervious pavements.
  2. Identify basic types of pervious pavements.
  3. Discuss benefits and challenges of pervious pavements.
  4. Analyze design aspects of pervious asphalt pavements.
  5. Highlight the construction and maintenance requirements of pervious asphalt pavements.

Dr.  Mbaki Onyango is U.C. Foundation Associate Professor at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC). She joined UTC in 2010 after graduating with a Ph.D. in Transportation Engineering from Kansas State University and Masters in Highway Engineering from the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom. Dr. Onyango teaches transportation and civil engineering classes and conducts research in transportation, mechanistic pavement design, pavement maintenance and preservation, and construction materials. She has been working closely with Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) and the Oakridge National Laboratory in Knoxville Tennessee. Some of her projects include evaluation of Open Graded Friction Course (OGFC) in Tennessee; pavement markings; Traffic calibration for the Mechanistic Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG) for the state of Tennessee; evaluation of the use of polyurethane material for levelling interstate highways in Tennessee and evaluation of geogrids reinforcement in flexible pavements using Accelerated Pavement Testing (APT), and design of high early strength fiber reinforced concrete.
