The electric distribution ground system is a complex network of various paths and accommodates the return current back to the substation. The Electric Engineering professionals and technicians who attend will be greeted with a contemporary overview of grounding practices and stray voltage issues and will leave the course with a full understanding of this complex network. Throughout the course, they will be exposed to everything from a review of engineering formulas (Ohm’s Law, Kirchhoff’s Laws, impedance, alternating current) to specific stray voltage situations, allowing them to apply all of the new or reinforced knowledge towards real-world examples.  

This event provides insight into the workings of the grounding system from the end user back to the substation. Attendees learn the causes of high ground currents, how they can be minimized, and the techniques to mitigating stray voltage. They will grasp not just terms and techniques, but how electric distribution grounding can heavily affect their animals, homes, and themselves. Upon completing this program, all attendees who participate will feel comfortable initiating and holding educated and insightful conversations with their colleagues who partake in grounding projects on the day-to-day.

Learning Outcomes 

  • Review engineering formulas in order to start a foundational knowledge of grounding (i.e. Ohm’s Law, Kirchhoff’s Voltage & Current Laws, etc.)
  • Evaluate different grounding methods and the NESC standards
  • Define important grounding concepts, including effectively grounded, step/touch, and bonded
  • Examine the distribution system as it pertains to grounding and understand resistance measurements, ground grids, and more
  • Grasp how electricity and grounding affects humans and animals and learn the threshold of fatality and perception
  • Define stray voltage and its mitigation techniques
  • Review stray and contact voltage scenarios (i.e., swimming pools, farms, fences, etc.)

Instructor

Paul Richardson, Engineer, Con Edison

Paul holds a MS in Electrical Power Engineering from New York University, Tandon School of Engineering. During his 15+ year career with Con Edison, Paul served in a variety of engineering capacities including technical and leadership roles in Electric Operations, Distribution Engineering, System and Transmission Operations, Project Management, and Regional Engineering. Paul is the recipient of technical awards relating to stray and contact voltage. He also holds a utility patent for a stray voltage insulating device.

We will be using Microsoft Teams to facilitate your participation in the upcoming event. You do not need to have an existing Teams account in order to participate in the broadcast – the course will play in your browser and you will have the option of using a microphone to speak with the room and ask questions, or type any questions in via the chat window and our on-site representative will relay your question to the instructor.

Cancellation Policy

Your registration may be transferred to a member of your organization up to 24 hours in advance of the event. Cancellations must be received on or before August 27, 2021 in order to be refunded and will be subject to a US $195.00 processing fee per registrant. No refunds will be made after this date. Cancellations received after this date will create a credit of the tuition (less processing fee) good toward any other EUCI event. This credit will be good for six months from the cancellation date. In the event of non-attendance, all registration fees will be forfeited. In case of conference cancellation, EUCIs liability is limited to refund of the event registration fee only.
