As new technologies integrate into the energy industry, human resilience is challenged by the complexity of adapting while maintaining legacy assets.  This transition presents opportunities and challenges to the work force. Proven Human Performance strategies and techniques, combined with augmented reality and other emerging technologies, can now be provided to a worker to make him safer and more resilient in the often dynamic and hostile work environments. 

The 2020 conference, Improving Human Performance on the Grid: The Science and Application of Human Performance and Augmented Reality to Enhance Safety and Reliability in the Changing Energy Workforce will convene thought leaders, developers, and subject matter experts for three days of information sharing and thought leadership. The theme for this year will be science, data, and application. The focus will be on a variety of subject areas—from the psychology of explaining, predicting, and changing human behavior, to technology tools and analytic software that helps drive innovation and solve company inefficiencies. Good Human Performance strategies can help identify problematic patterns, determine the root causes of many challenging issues, and uncover latent errors in the system.

Presentations will cover a wide array of information from both inside and outside of the electrical industry to apply towards all high-risk industries. Join us as we explore case studies and hear talks from leading practitioners who will help illustrate how to set up the right methods for use in your organization.

The Brain Science Behind Human Performance and Organizational Culture


Many conversations in human performance and organizational psychology often end with “Okay, but why?” Why is that peer checking reduces errors? Why does reducing flashing on your screen reduce threats to situational awareness? Why can workers in some organizations have a questioning attitude, while workers in other organizations can’t? The answer to these kinds of questions is usually “because of the brain.”  This workshop brings together many commonly discussed areas of human performance, bringing in the neuroscience behind why they work.

Michael E. Legatt, PhD is Founder and CEO of ResilientGrid, Inc., whose mission is to empower critical infrastructure operations to continually strengthen resiliency and reliability. Dr. Legatt has PhDs in both Energy Systems Engineering and Clinical Health Psychology/Neuropsychology. He has used the integration of these fields in his approach to building software solutions and management techniques which focus on optimizing human performance in complex technical operating environments. Dr. Legatt presents regularly at energy industry and government events about the impact of organizational culture and the importance of optimizing human-computer interaction within complex socio-technical systems, and he has contributed to several articles, research projects, and books on the subject.

Learning Activities for HP


The fundamentals of Human Performance are one of the most important concepts for individuals to learn when they first start their HP journey. Routinely, employees are smothered to death by PowerPoint briefings and their visceral response is to turn it all off and hope the class ends soon. It doesn’t have to be that way! By gaining hands-on experience and being able to make mistakes in a controlled environment, learning Human Performance becomes “stickier”.  Training on feet, not just in your seat, makes practicing HP concepts exciting and fun. You won’t even realize you’re learning!

Dave Sowers is a founding member of Knowledge Vine; a Human Performance Training and Consulting organization which strives to reduce the frequency and severity of human errors in the workplace. ( Dave has almost 30 years of experience in power generation and the utility industry. He is a veteran of the U.S. Navy Nuclear Power Program and holds a bachelor’s degree in resources management and a master’s degree in both management and emergency management and homeland security.

In this workshop, we will share our client engagement experience from developing 34 eBooks and 21 AR apps over a two-year period to restructure multi-year apprentice programs. Critical to our projects’ success is client engagement, accomplished by establishing lead points of contact throughout the management structure and connecting with the top SMEs in the field. This engagement is only possible through direct communication, input, and working shoulder-to-shoulder.

Beyond digitizing paper processes, Index uses the principals of Human Performance to find and match mental models between instructors and students. Index’s apps and eBooks provide multi-model learning techniques, giving students information in auditory, visual and tactile formats to improve learning time and retention.

As a member of the Index AR Solutions leadership team, Chris Biernacki views Index’s augmented reality solutions as a catalyst that will lead to huge productivity increases in the workforces of Index’s clients. Chris reports directly to Dexter Lilley, EVP and COO of Index.

Chris brings experience from the shipbuilding and commercial nuclear sectors to Index. Chris comes to Index from Mirion Technologies Inc. (formerly Canberra Industries Inc.), a world leader in nuclear measurement technology, where he provided engineering and support services for Mirion’s industrial clients. Prior to Mirion, Chris served as a nuclear engineer and health physicist at Newport News Shipbuilding, supporting the refueling and overhaul program for the 90,000-ton U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln nuclear Aircraft Carrier and inactivation of the U.S.S Enterprise.

Chris earned his Master of Business Administration degree from the College of William & Mary – Mason School of Business where he graduated with the Beta Gamma Sigma honors society distinction. He is a graduate of Radford University where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in physics with a minor in both mathematics and chemistry.

Carlee Snyder, Index AR Solutions

Carlee Snyder is a Virginia Tech alum who holds a B.A. in International Business with a minor in Communications. Upon graduation, she participated in a six-month internship at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida where she gained a considerable amount of client relationship skills before selecting Index AR Solutions as her first full-time job.

As an Index AR Project Manager, Carlee desires to provide businesses and people with the means to live safer, higher quality lives. At Index, she strives to go above and beyond in serving her clients and teammates. Taking Lean to the Next Level with AR apps and eBooks


Since Toyota executive Taiichi Ohno identified the seven types of waste in production processes and called it Lean, organizations across the globe have attempted to implement Lean Thinking in their operational and training centers.  Most organizations have had limited success because they either did not want to make the significant investment to lean out their processes or they did not have the appropriate tools or both!  Technology has caught up with Lean!  Processes still require thorough examination and documentation to create detailed step-by-step instructions, but these steps can now be captured with photography, videography, 3D modeling, graphic design and delivered to the people training or doing the work in engaging, easy to use mobile augmented reality (AR) apps and eBooks.  These enabling technologies drive Lean to the next level and helps users complete training and operational tasks safer and with little to no errors.

Dexter Lilley, Index AR Solutions

Dexter Lilley is the Executive Vice President and COO of Index AR Solutions.  Dexter has lead Index’s Operations team from 2 people in January 2015 to almost 30 people today.  During this time, Index’s revenue and backlog has doubled to quadruple each year.  In addition, Index’s services have grown from augmented reality (AR) apps only to a broad array of operational and training content creation and delivery systems to include photo, video, design, modeling and writing on the creation side and AR apps, non-AR apps, eBooks and a photo/video library system on the delivery side. 

Prior to Index, Dexter held several executive positions in the shipbuilding industry.  Most recently, he served as Director of Strategy and Business Development for Huntington Ingalls Industries, creating value through diverse innovations such as HII’s teaming agreement with one of the top wind energy companies and winning corporate development funding for augmented reality. 

Prior to joining Strategy and Business Development, Dexter was Director of Steel Fabrication and Assembly.  Previously, he was Director of Component Fabrication and Assembly at Newport News Shipbuilding.  In these construction and manufacturing roles, he acted as an agent of change, bringing lean manufacturing tools and techniques into the company to drive significant improvements on touch labor cost and using modern scheduling techniques, such as theory of constraints, to dramatically improve schedule performance.  

Dexter is a 1980 graduate of the Christopher Newport University with a Bachelor of Science degree.  In 1988, he graduated from The Mason School of Business of the College of William and Mary with a Master of Business Administration.  

Basics of AR and eBooks. What Makes a Good Use Case?


Our experience has shown Augmented Reality (AR) apps, individually and combined with eBooks, have delivered very high ROIs, +100% in most cases. These tools eliminate error rates, prevent process drift, remove learning friction and improve knowledge retention.  It is important to understand not every use case is a good fit for AR apps and/or eBooks. Applying these new “best in class” products and technology to the right use case is a key driver to success. Incorrect deployment of these new technologies can be unnecessary and expensive.

John Arczynski, Index AR Solutions

A member of the Index AR Solutions team since its inception, John Arczynski assists the CEO and COO on the company’s vision, strategy and direction. His vast responsibilities include administration, operations, financial, public relations, facilities, sourcing, legal and other actions as required by the senior management. Prior to helping launch Index, John served as a financial advisor at Bank of America Merrill Lynch where he grew his clients’ assets under management to roughly $15 million in less than two years. John earned Bachelor of Arts degrees in Economics and History from James Madison University, as well as a concentration in political economics.

Zach Korkowski , Index AR Solutions

Zach Korkowski is a proud member of the Operations Team. His role as a Project Manager focuses on process documentation and process improvement.  

Prior to joining Index AR Solutions, Zach began his career in paper manufacturing. He was a member of the Product Development team working as an Analytical Chemist and later transitioning to a Product Development/Process Engineer. During his time in the paper manufacturing industry, Zach co-authored several patents and was responsible for documenting test methods and data analysis.  

Zach holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Wofford College where he was also a two-time captain of the men’s basketball team. Zach currently lives in Williamsburg, VA but grew up living in Asia and Europe. Zach has family that lives in Big Sky, Montana and Stuttgart, Germany and enjoys traveling to visit them any chance he gets.  


Mohammed Alfayyoumi, Director of Electric Transmission System Operations Center, Dominion Energy

Mohammed Alfayyoumi is the Director of Electric Transmission System Operations Center. He is responsible for directing a technical and professional staff that are responsible for the safe and reliable operation of Dominion Energy’s transmission assets. Mohammed acts as Dominion Energy’s primary transmission operations interface with regional transmission organizations (RTOs), reliability organizations, neighboring utilities, and grid-connected customers.

Alfayyoumi joined Dominion Energy in 1999 as an engineer in Distribution Planning. He then assumed various roles in Distribution and Transmission Planning and Operations and Dominion Energy Six Sigma. He was named manager-Electric Transmission Field Operations in 2008. He became manager-SOC Operations in 2012 and assumed his current post in 2013. Mohammed served on numerous industry committes, panels, and working groups. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for Conexus, formerly Prevent Blindness Mid-Atlantic.

He received his bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Jordan University of Science and Technology and his Master’s in Electrical Engineering from Virginia Tech. He completed his MBA from UMASS and is a Certified Six Sigma Master Black Belt.

Dan Arczynski is President and CEO of Index AR Solutions, a high-tech company he launched in 2015. With its interactive eBooks and Augmented Reality apps that combine text, videos, photos, graphics and 3D images, Index is transforming the way industry-leading companies across the U.S. train and empower their workers. Working primarily with companies in the power industry, Index has delivered dozens of eBooks and AR apps. These eBooks and apps are quickly transferring the knowledge and expertise of highly skilled employees to the next generation of workers.

Prior to co-launching Index, Dan spent nearly two decades serving a series of executive positions in the shipbuilding industry. He has served as corporate vice president of both business development and strategy at HII as well as sector vice president of strategy at both Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding and Northrop Grumman Newport News. He was previously an executive in the banking industry and a consultant creating shareholder value for clients.

Dan is a veteran of the U.S. Army and served for twelve years attaining the rank of Major. During this time, he led five platoon size units and commanded a light infantry company. He also taught economics, finance and investments at West Point. Dan is a 1978 graduate of the United States Military Academy where he was on the Dean’s List, Commandant’s List and Superintendent’s List. He is a 1986 graduate of the Harvard Business School where he was a graduate of Highest Distinction and was elected Baker Scholar.

David served in the United States Marine Corps and has held various leadership roles with R&R Marine Maintenance, Chevron, Chevron-Phillips, and Entergy. David is the founder and CEO of Knowledge Vine, LLC. David is a subject matter expert in Human Performance and led those efforts for Entergy Corporation for over 12 years. He has a proven track record in organizational effectiveness and alignment which led Entergy to its best record in the history of the company in 2013. He gained his experience and knowledge in the petrochemical, nuclear power, fossil fuel generation, utility transmission, and distribution industries. David has a Bachelor of Science in Safety Engineering.

In her 32-year career in training and talent development Deveny’s training has reached from youth with positive awareness training, to the medical software world with WebMD, Axis Clinical Software and Kaiser Permanente, and then the high risk world of the electric utility industry at Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) based in Portland Oregon. and the Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC) based in Salt Lake City, UT.

With experience developing and training a diverse range of topics such as human performance, substation asset management, GIS, medical records, medical implant statistics, diversity, leadership, and positive awareness, the question is always the same, “how to make training transfer to real life?”

For summer relaxation, Deveny retreats to the garden, in the winter she can be found on the ski slopes burning off energy and in between finds adventure in motorcycle touring. Whether it’s gardening, skiing, motorcycle adventure, human performance training, or 4 young grandchildren training their adults, Deveny is always exploring creative ways to learn and teach human performance.

Jamie Campbell, General Manager, Pump & Motor Service Center

Jamie manages the Pump and Motor Services (P&MS) business for Framatome which includes engineering, field, and shop operations. Jamie joined Framatome in 2006 and has served in a variety of roles throughout Framatome. Prior to joining P&MS, Jamie was Manager of Component and Services Engineering where his team provided design, fabrication and installation support for NSSS components, including Reactor Vessel Closure Heads and our Integrated Head Assemblies. Jamie is a registered Professional Engineer in the Commonwealth of Virginia and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from the Virginia Military Institute.

David Costello, Chief Sales and Customer Service Officer, Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories

David Costello graduated from Texas A&M University in 1991 with a B.S. in electrical engineering. He joined Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Inc. (SEL) as a field application engineer and later served as a technical support director, national sales and customer service director and Sr. Vice President of Sales and Customer Service. He currently serves as Chief Sales and Customer Service Officer and works in Fair Oaks Ranch, Texas.

David has authored more than 30 technical papers and 25 application guides. He was honored to receive the 2008 Walter A. Elmore Best Paper Award from the Georgia Institute of Technology Protective Relaying Conference, the 2013 Outstanding Engineer Award from the Central Texas section of the IEEE Power and Energy Society, and the 2016 Best Overall Technical Presentation Award from the NETA PowerTest Conference.

David completed the Utility Executive Course at the University of Idaho in 2017. He is a senior member of IEEE, a registered professional engineer in Texas and Michigan, and was a member of the planning committee for the Conference for Protective Relay Engineers at Texas A&M University for over 20 years.

Thomas J. (Tom) Galloway Sr, President and CEO, NATF

Thomas J. Galloway serves as the president and CEO and a board director for the North American Transmission Forum (NATF). As CEO, Mr. Galloway leads staff and facilitates member activities to achieve the NATF’s mission: to promote excellence in the reliable operation of the electric transmission system. Mr. Galloway began his professional career in 1981 with Northeast Utilities, holding a variety of engineering and managerial roles. Mr. Galloway continued his career with the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO) for the next 10 years, gaining valuable experience and skills related to human performance, organizational effectiveness, operational excellence, and performance improvement. Mr. Galloway subsequently served as interim president and CEO for SERC Reliability Corporation and SERC’s vice president and director of compliance. In this role, Mr. Galloway was responsible for the implementation of the NERC Compliance Monitoring and Enforcement Program (CMEP) within the SERC region. Immediately prior to joining NATF, Mr. Galloway was NERC’s chief reliability officer and the senior vice president for the Reliability Performance organization.  During Mr. Galloway’s seven plus years as NATF’s CEO, the membership has grown significantly and has made increasingly positive impacts on transmission reliability and resiliency. These include forging strategic relationships; adding program areas such as sharing operating experience, member assistance, and equipment performance; and leadership on a range of key projects such as supplemental operating strategies and creation of a supply chain cyber security framework.   Mr. Galloway continues to be driven by his passion for electric system reliability and the recognition of the critical role electricity plays in everyday life.

James R. Golden, Ph.D., Advisor to the President, William & Mary

James (Jim) Golden is a retired Army brigadier general and a retired William & Mary Vice President, where he played a key role developing a new strategic planning process, establishing a Technology Transfer Office, and creating the college’s Technology and Business Center, among many other accomplishments. Prior to joining William & Mary in 1999, Jim was a senior executive in the strategy department at the Tenneco where he served as executive director of corporate technology and innovation, and executive assistant to the chairman and CEO.

Earlier, Jim completed a 31-year Army career and retired as a Brigadier General. His military decorations include the Distinguished Flying Cross for his service as an air observer in Vietnam, the Bronze Star, two awards of the Legion of Merit, and the Distinguished Service Medal. Following his service, Jim joined the tenured faculty of his alma mater, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, where he became Professor and Head of the Department of Social Sciences. During his tenure, Golden served intermittently on short-term assignments as a senior staff economist on the President’s Council of Economic Advisers under Presidents Nixon, Ford and Carter, working primarily on industry regulatory issues.

Jim graduated from West Point standing fourth in the Class of 1965 and was a starting midfielder on the Army soccer team that went to the final four in the NCAA tournament his last two years. He received a master’s degree in public administration from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government and earned a Ph.D. in economics at Harvard.

Jason Handley, P.E., Director – Smart Grid Technology and Operations, Duke Energy Corporation

Jason is a respected utility industry professional based in Charlotte, North Carolina. He has over 21 years of utility experience specializing in the smart grid, distribution automation, and operations management.

In his current role, Jason defines and develops new technologies impacting the electrical grid and oversees all of the ongoing operational aspects on new technology pilot projects in Duke Energy’s Smart Grid Emerging Technology group. He excels at understanding the increasingly complex utility environment, managing the new digital utility workforce, and delivering on the execution and financials of technology projects.

Kevin Harris, Field Engineering Manager, Eversource Energy

Kevin E. Harris has 31 years of service with Eversource Energy (formally Northeast Utilities) in the field of Test and Commissioning of Generation, Substation and Switchyard facilities. As the Field Engineering Manager, Kevin Serves a Team of 10 Supervisors, and 70 Union Field Engineers and Test Specialist maintaining, troubleshooting and commissioning Transmission and Distribution Substations to include Electric Field Operations support with Distributed Generation and Distribution Automation technology deployed throughout the distribution systems. He is responsible for NPCC/NERC regulatory maintenance of the Eversource Energy system in Connecticut and Western Massachusetts.

In 2012, Kevin presented on Electric Utility Industry Practices with Human Performance Tools at the first annual NERC conference on Human Performance in Atlanta, GA. In 2013, he presented at the first WECC Human Performance Working Group Conference: Job Briefings, Creative Defense Barriers and HP Metrics. In 2014, Kevin was invited back to the WECC Human Performance Working Group Conference and presented on Effective Pre Job Briefs, co-presented with Mike Carden of Dominion Power on Creative Defense Barriers and co-presented with Wally Geoff of Bonneville Power (DOE) on new perspectives around the Safety Pyramid, Iceberg model and SIF. In 2015, at the WECC HPWG Conference Kevin, working with Tom Neary, co-presented on the WECC Pre Job Brief Tool Box, an excellent tool to build or benchmark a PJB form. He has also presented on these subjects at the 2015 and 2016 NATF HP Symposiums now merged with the NERC HP Conference. At the 5th Annual NERC Conference on Human Performance in Atlanta, GA, Kevin presented on the HP Journey using Metrics to show the story. Most recently, He has presented on Human Organizational Performance as it relates to PRC-005 at the 21st NPCC Fall Workshops (2017).

RJ Jubber, Sr. Manager District Operations, Evergy

RJ has been in the Electric Utility Industry for six years holding two different roles. Early in his current role RJ started his Human Performance Journey by obtaining his practitioner’s certification from Shane Bush HPI in 2017. Since that time RJ has been working to practically apply the HPI principals into everyday distribution operations at Evergy. In the last three years RJ has been a key influencer of HPI at Evergy and a member of the HPI Steering committee that oversaw the Human Performance implementation strategy across all Operations at Evergy. Currently the work groups under RJ are formally implementing Human and Organizational Performance in their everyday operations.

Dr. Michael Legatt, Founder and CEO, ResilientGrid, Inc.

Michael E. Legatt, PhD is Founder and CEO of ResilientGrid, Inc., whose mission is to empower critical infrastructure operations to continually strengthen resiliency and reliability. Dr. Legatt has PhDs in both Energy Systems Engineering and Clinical Health Psychology/Neuropsychology. He has used the integration of these fields in his approach to building software solutions and management techniques which focus on optimizing human performance in complex technical operating environments.

Prior to founding ResilientGrid, Dr. Legatt spent a decade as the principal human factors engineer for the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), where his development of the Macomber Map® software system has been helping ERCOT operators for over ten years, and Southwest Power Pool operators for over three years maintain situational awareness and manage transmission operations. The results of which include achieving a new record for integration of wind generation (62% SPP, 54% ERCOT), maintaining increasingly complex real-time operation, and providing advanced tools for operator training and grid simulations.

Dr. Legatt’s work with electric utilities facilitates and fosters a transformation towards improved organizational culture, enhanced collaboration in emergency situations, and a support of organizational creativity as a means to both reduce operating errors and operational costs. In one example, a company improved from a bottom 10th percentile work environment, into a top ten “Best Places to Work” culture in under two years.

He has also done work on the behavioral aspects of electric vehicle to grid integration, leading a project with ERCOT, University of Texas at Austin, EV-TEC and Pecan Street Project to understand the impact of electric vehicle charging and driver behavioral patterns on the bulk electric system. The final result showed ways that EVs can be optimized for distribution operations though intelligent charging and providing ancillary services, enhancing grid stability and resiliency.

Dr. Legatt presents regularly at energy industry and government events about the impact of organizational culture and the importance of optimizing human-computer interaction within complex socio-technical systems, and he has contributed to several articles, research projects, and books on the subject.

It was the 2003 blackout in the Northeastern United States which sparked his interest in the psychology of critical infrastructure management. He provided emergency communications as an amateur (ham) radio operator during the event, and was recognized with a commendation from Westchester County, New York for his participation.

In 2018 Dr. Legatt was honored as one of the U.S. Army’s “Mad Scientists”, by Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC), for his work focusing on the future of situational awareness and common relevant operational pictures.

In 2016 he became a Certified Performance Technologist.

Dr. Jim Lesnick, Neuroscientist, Riverside Health System

Dr. Lesnick is Senior Vice President of Business and Venture Development for Riverside Health System, building on more than 20 years of experience serving patients. Earlier, he was Senior Vice President and Medical Director of Riverside Medical Group, a diverse and growing group of over 500 providers. He also served as Riverside Medical Director of the Chesapeake Regional, Riverside and University of Virginia Radiosurgery Center located at Riverside Regional Medical Center.

With a particular practice interest in Gamma Knife radiosurgery, Dr. Lesnick managed conservative treatment for all neurosurgical conditions of the brain and spine. His philosophy was to remember that he is not treating scans or x-rays; he is treating a patient.

In his spare time, Dr. Lesnick enjoys spending time with his family and their golden retriever, sailing and playing golf.

David Marx, CEO, Outcome Engenuity

David Marx is CEO of Outcome Engenuity, a Fort Lauderdale-based management consulting firm.

David has a BS in Mechanical Systems Engineering (1985) and Juris Doctor in Law (1997). David began his career as a Boeing aircraft design engineer. In his final years at Boeing, David organized a human factors and safety group that worked to help airlines achieve better safety outcomes.

In 1997, David launched Outcome Engenuity to focus on the management of human error through the integration of systems engineering, human factors, and the law. David’s firm currently spends the majority of its effort on helping organizations design workplace systems and build workplace cultures to create world-class outcomes. In this effort, David has developed award-winning investigative processes and risk modeling methods. David is also recognized as the father of “Just Culture” a model for building a strong culture of accountability within an organization.

David’s first book, Whack-a-Mole: The Price We Pay For Expecting Perfection, was released in September 2009. David’s latest book release, Dave’s Subs: A Novel Story About Workplace Accountability, was released in November 2015.

Dr. James Merlo, VP of Operational Excellence, Knowledge Vine

Dr. James Merlo is a human factors engineer with a proven track record in organizational leadership from the battlefield to the boardroom. James works from the premise that humans are the most important part of any system and given a good design, an appropriate procedure, and consistent competent leadership, organizations and their human capital will thrive.

Dr. Merlo currently serves as Vice President of Operational Excellence at Knowledge Vine, the leader in Human Performance Implementation and Application. James leads Knowledge Vine’s efforts in helping companies around the world leverage Human Performance Improvement technologies to reduce the frequency and severity of errors while building an organization of shared trust.

Prior to joining Knowledge Vine, James was at the North American Reliability Corporation (NERC) as a Vice President and Director of the Reliability Risk Management department. In this role, he led the electric reliability organization’s efforts to assess the industry vulnerabilities with regard to events on the Bulk Electric System and how human performance challenges affected system reliability.

James served over 22 years in a variety of leadership roles in the US Army, including combat tours in Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Significant positions include Deputy Brigade Commander in Baghdad, Iraq 2004-2005 and as an assistant professor and program director at the United States Military Academy.

Dr. Merlo earned his Bachelor of Science in Human Factors Psychology from West Point, his Masters in Engineering Psychology from the University of Illinois, and his PhD in Applied Experimental and Human Factors Psychology from the University of Central Florida. He is the author of over 50 publications on the subjects of human factors engineering and human performance. An avid snowboarder, wake surfer, and outdoorsman, when James is not working, he can always be found in or on the water.

Tom Neary, Co-Founder and CEO, KnowledgeKeeper

Tom was the Co-Founder and CEO of OpCon Technologies, Inc. where he created KnowledgeKeeper, a location based safety system. Tom is an iOS software developer and is fluent in applying Apple’s ecosystem to help companies create cloud connected field workforces that use mobile first software on Apple’s mobile and wearable devices to achieve high levels of performance. Tom also volunteers time to promote and strengthen the use of Human Performance with the goal of achieving zero fatalities in the workplace. In his spare time Tom tinkers with partial off-grid solar systems.

Prior to co-founding OpCon Technologies, Tom designed and installed industrial process control systems for 17 years. Tom holds a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from University of New Hampshire and a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering from Tulane University in New Orleans, LA. Tom is a Registered Professional Engineer in the state of California.

Lorne Poindexter, Senior Manager, Innovation Nuclear & Fossil at Ameren Services, Ameren

Currently assigned to the Corporate Innovation team. Responsibilities include implementation of projects to improve efficiency and keep customer rates as low as possible. Lorne has 28 years of experience at the Callaway Nuclear Plant and has done a number of jobs during his career, as a deconner, non-licensed operator, licensed reactor operator, general supervisor radwaste, senior reactor operator certification, work week manager and maintenance manager I&C. He enjoys continuous improvement and project implementation.

Riz Shah, Organizational Culture Advisor, Department of Energy

Rizwan “Riz” Shah is the Organizational Culture Advisor for the Department of Energy. He provides direct consultation and assistance to Appointee, Federal, and Contractor senior officials and their organizations on the assessment, management, development, and improvement of Organizational Culture, Human Resource training and development, Human Performance Improvement, and High-Reliability Organizations. He also serves as the Department’s staff level liaison with other government, international, and professional organizations in these areas. He provides authoritative advice on and is a champion for continuous improvement and promoting organizational performance and reliability.

Mr. Shah’s experience spans 25 years. He has earned a master’s in social-organizational Psychology from Columbia University, a Bachelor’s of Science in Technical Management from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University with a minor in Aviation Safety (Event Investigation), and is a graduate of the US Army Eisenhower Leadership Development Program. He is also an active member of the Association of Talent Development.

As a Soldier and Aviation Officer in the United States Army, he demonstrated exemplary leadership abilities conducting operations in austere conditions in 13 countries. Before his retirement from Military service, he earned the reputation of building high performing teams in any mission profile and is a recipient of the Bronze Star Medal.

Recently, Mr. Shah received the Secretary of Energy Honor Achievement Award for the development and delivery of the VET-Success Program (onboarding and developing Veterans at U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)). His commitment to service extends beyond DOE. In 2016 he was awarded the State of Maryland Certificate for Volunteerism by Governor Hogan for his work with the homeless Veteran community.

Mr. Shah resides in Springfield, Virginia and works in Washington D.C. He is an avid woodworker, and his motto is “Let me not fail them.

Dr. John J. Simmins, Associate Provost, Alfred University

Dr. John J. Simmins is Associate Provost for Research and Economic Development at Alfred University where he oversees approximately 50 research faculty and 200 graduate students. In addition, he directs the efforts of the NYS Center for Advanced Ceramic Technology (CACT) as Executive Director. Simmins is also partially responsible for bringing jobs and opportunities to western NY and in particular Allegany County, one of the most underserved counties in NY State. Dr. Simmins has expertise in the intersection of augmented reality, artificial intelligence and geospatial information systems developed while he was at the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) where he was employed for the 10 years before becoming Associate Provost.

At EPRI, John’s responsibilities focused on bringing thought leadership in the area of integrating diverse applications such as Advanced Meter Infrastructure, Meter Data Management Systems, Distribution Management Systems, Customer Information Systems, Geospatial Information Systems and Outage Management Systems.

John received his B.S. and a Ph.D. in Ceramic Science from Alfred University in 1984 and 1990 respectively.

Scott Sommers, Vice President, Index AR

Scott oversees Index’s Marketing initiatives and Client and Corporate Development. Under his leadership since joining the team in January 2017, Index’s revenue has doubled and its eBook and augmented reality apps orders have quadrupled. Since Scott came on board, Index’s employee growth has been seven-fold.

Index continues to expand and refine its Augmented Reality (AR) apps business adding eBooks that combine text, videos, photos, graphics, and 3D illustrations. These eBooks, combined with AR apps, greatly enhance the ability of companies to transfer the knowledge of its most experienced, skilled employees to the next generation of workers.

Dave Sowers, Co-Founder and Vice President, Knowledge Vine

Dave Sowers is a founding member of Knowledge Vine, a Human Performance Training and Consulting organization. Dave has almost 30 years of experience in power generation and the utility industry.

He started his career in the U.S. Naval Nuclear Power Program where he served aboard the aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN-73). After the Navy, Dave started working in commercial nuclear power as an operator and trainer in New Jersey and Louisiana. Dave returned to government service with US Army Corps of Engineers at a hydro-electric dam in Alabama. Throughout his career, Dave has served in many diverse roles including Plant Operator and Trainer, Emergency Responder, Control Room Supervisor, and Power Plant Manager.

In addition to the technical training received in the US Navy, Dave has a Bachelor of Science degree in Resources Management from Troy University, a Master of Science in Management degree from Troy University, and a Master of Science in Emergency Management and Homeland Security from George Washington University. 

Dave’s work and education experience gives him a unique perspective and the ability to bridge the gaps between an organization’s frontline workforce and their management team. Since he has lived Human Performance from both perspectives, he is an effective, relatable, and credible communicator of its principles and methodologies.
