Managing construction projects in the real world can be very different from what you learn in the book; it gives us a good background from which to start, but it cannot come close to predicting what can and ultimately will happen in the real world.

In the real world, projects fail—a lot. Throughout this course, we will discuss how and why projects fail—as well as risks and how to quantify and manage them—and conclude with building an understanding of how to deal with stakeholders on a construction project. Whether you’re planning your first venture or you’re a veteran project manager who is looking for new ideas for your execution, the goal of this course is to leave attendees feeling confident in their ability to create, monitor, and complete a construction project successfully.

Learning Outcomes  

  • Review the project basics, including how to initiate, plan, execute, and close a project
  • Evaluate how to manage your project so it is on time and on-budget (i.e., avoiding failure to meet schedules, budget overruns, quality issues, etc.)
  • Identify project risks and determine their impact, ownership, and response

    Rich Garman, RWG Consulting

    Rich Garman has over 30 years of experience managing projects in the energy industry. He is currently a part of the RWG Consulting team and a Senior Project Manager at Great River Energy, where he oversees North Dakota business development projects for the utility. His current project portfolio ($100M+) consists of the Spiritwood Energy Park portfolio of projects, which consists of a 70MGY ethanol biorefinery and 99 MW power plant and all associated infrastructure.

    Rich is also an assistant professor for the University of Mary in the Engineering – Construction Management department. He has been instrumental in the development of the curriculum and instruction of key course in Project Management. He has also been an adjunct professor for the University of Mary since 2012 where he teaches graduate courses in Project and Operations Management.

    He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from South Dakota School of Mines & Technology and degrees in Master of Business Administration and Project Management from University of Mary. Rich is a registered Project Management Professional (PMP).

    Online Delivery

    We will be using Microsoft Teams to facilitate your participation in the upcoming event. You do not need to have an existing Teams account in order to participate in the broadcast – the course will play in your browser and you will have the option of using a microphone to speak with the room and ask questions, or type any questions in via the chat window and our on-site representative will relay your question to the instructor.

    • IMPORTANT NOTE: After November 30 you will not be able to join a Teams meeting using Internet Explorer 11. Microsoft recommends downloading and installing the Teams app if possible. You may also use the Edge browser or Chrome.
    • You will receive a meeting invitation will include a link to join the meeting.

    Cancellation Policy

    Your registration may be transferred to a member of your organization up to 24 hours in advance of the event. Cancellations must be received on or before June 18, 2021 in order to be refunded and will be subject to a US $195.00 processing fee per registrant. No refunds will be made after this date. Cancellations received after this date will create a credit of the tuition (less processing fee) good toward any other EUCI event. This credit will be good for six months from the cancellation date. In the event of non-attendance, all registration fees will be forfeited. In case of conference cancellation, EUCIs liability is limited to refund of the event registration fee only.
