Data Center Electrical Power Systems

Data Center Electrical Power Systems

July 12-13, 2021 | Online :: Central Time

In this introductory course, attendees will learn everything from the basics and history of data centers to decarbonization. Starting with infrastructure, power usage efficiency, requirements, and the importance of redundancy, the program will lead into next steps in planning your data center power (i.e., strategies, mapping, interconnection, and planning). We will then get into more detail on construction, operation, maintenance, and management and finish off with specifics on decarbonization. In the last section, attendees will learn more about microgrids and renewables, electrification, backing-up data centers, and more.

The goal is for attendees to leave the program with a foundational understanding of the data center backbone and the reasoning for understanding, investing in, and prioritizing data centers. Although structured for early career design engineers and anyone interested in learning more about this aspect of the industry, it is also encouraged for anyone who would like a review or update on their evolution and where they’re going.

Learning Outcomes

  • Review the basics and history of data centers and why they’re used
  • Discuss the importance of redundancy in the data center backbone and the key infrastructure required
  • Evaluate how to plan data center power, including the goal and target setting, strategies, and interconnection
  • Explain how to construct, manage, and maintain data centers (i.e., reliability, operations, asset investments)
  • Discuss the importance of decarbonization data centers and review electrification, renewables, microgrids, and more

Instructors

Kingsley Asare, Principal Advisory Consultant, Hitachi ABB Power Grids

Kingsley has 25 years’ experience in market, technical and financial assessment for renewable and conventional energy projects and supply contracts concerning origination, development and commercial management.  He has worked with several international banks, private equity investors, developers and project sponsors in the structuring, development and financing of projects and mergers and acquisitions (M&A) in the U.S. and internationally. Some relevant accomplishments include: a lead role in the structuring, development, marketing, negotiations, and financial closing of greenfield renewable and conventional gas-fired power generation projects totaling over 900 MW; a lead role in the structuring, pricing and commercial optimization of offtake PPAs and hedge agreements totaling in excess of 3,500 MW, leading financial planning and analytics for $700 million gross margin PJM power portfolio; and leading valuation to support a 650MW asset divestiture decision.

John Glassmire, Senior Advisor for Grid Edge Solutions, Hitachi ABB Power Grids

Trained as a mechanical/electrical engineer, John has extensive experience in the technical and economic potential for energy storage and distributed energy resources to provide clean, low-cost, reliable power. He has led and worked on a wide-variety of energy research and consulting projects, including targeted business cases for customers considering renewable energy and batteries, cost-to-society environmental and economic impacts of clean energy technologies for grid planning, integrated resource planning for energy infrastructure, ex-post financial analysis of demand management programs, and monitoring and evaluation frameworks for energy efficiency and distributed energy programs. His experience is global, ranging from small islands in the Pacific, to isolated Arctic diesel grids, to larger island utilities in the Caribbean, to grid edge technologies in mainland utility networks in Australia, North America, and Europe. An accomplished speaker, he has led training workshops on unlocking the benefits of battery energy storage systems, integrating renewables into electrical grids, and microgrid resiliency for thousands of people worldwide. John also serves as an adjunct professor in distributed power systems at the University of Washington. BSME (Rice), MSME (Northwestern).
