Overview

This introductory course to Asset management takes the participants on a visually engaging journey through the broad landscape of asset management concepts. A series of interactive exercises will demonstrate how the concepts are applied into practice in a way that will help Water and Wastewater Utilities design strategies to realize value from their assets. Using industry best practices, participants will learn how to plan around risks, develop asset health and condition metrics, manage asset lifecycles strategies, engage stakeholders through Levels of Service and make optimized trade-offs in a context of financial constraints, aging systems, changing regulations, and growth.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explain what Asset Management is and the benefits it has to a Water and Wastewater organization
  • Describe the differences between a policy, a strategy and a plan
  • Appreciate the importance of a “Line of Sight” across the different level of an organization and across the different service areas
  • List some of the global standards for asset management and describe how each of them can be useful
  • Analyze risk events using an industry accepted methodology (e.g. Water quality dechlorination events, breaches in operating certificate)
  • Identify some of the barriers to the effective operationalization of asset management within an organization
  • Describe the key protocols associated with operating and maintaining assets and how these can extend asset life (e.g. water treatment plants, reservoirs, pump stations, pipes)
  • Explain how an asset hierarchy is typically developed and applied
  • Provide examples how Asset Management helps with financial planning and decision making
  • Describe a framework for good practice Capital Investment Planning using asset management principles

Instructors

David Albrice

David has over 25 years experience in asset management in both the public and private sectors, having provided services for a wide variety of organizations including water utilities, municipalities, airports and rail networks. He has a degree in Urban & Regional Planning and is a certified financial reserve analyst, a certified ISO 55001 asset management assessor, a certified maintenance reliability leader and change manager. David has delivered asset management training for dozens of organizations and has invigilated the asset management certificate exam on behalf of the Institute of Asset Management.


Jason Yu

Jason Yu, E.I.T is an Assistant Project Engineer at Metro Vancouver. He received his Bachelor of Applied Science from the University of British Columbia in Civil Engineering. Within Metro Vancouver, he works to improve the utility’s decision making and business processes. He manages the Balanced Scorecard that tracks and sets targets for customer levels of service and other key performance indicators for the Liquid Waste department. He has also implemented a stage-gate process to standardize and clarify the scope of capital projects. He has presented at the UAIM LIFT for Management Initiative, LESAM PI conference, and the WSAA/AMCV benchmarking initiative, and an Asset Management session moderator at WEFTEC. He has a certificate in Asset Management Planning from IPWEA.

Cancellation Policy

Your registration may be transferred to a member of your organization up to 24 hours in advance of the event. Cancellations must be received on or before June 26, 2020 in order to be refunded and will be subject to a US $195.00 processing fee per registrant. No refunds will be made after this date. Cancellations received after this date will create a credit of the tuition (less processing fee) good toward any other EUCI event. This credit will be good for six months from the cancellation date. In the event of non-attendance, all registration fees will be forfeited. In case of conference cancellation, EUCIs liability is limited to refund of the event registration fee only.
