This is an Online Course. In lieu of recent developments with COVID-19, for the health and safety of our speakers and attendees, we have decided to move many of our events to Online Courses.

Underground Transmission Fundamentals, July 21-22, 2020 | Online

Underground transmission is a costly and complicated project type. One of the most complicated components of an underground transmission line are the splices connecting two cables together. If you are interested in learning more about how these splices are accomplished and the maintenance required, this course will provide you with a high-level overview of transmission splicing and the processes involved. In addition, a review of required maintenance of lines and splices will be reviewed.  This is the ideal course for engineers of underground transmission projects, project managers or anyone involved with underground transmission and desiring a more detailed understanding of splicing.

Learning Outcomes

  • Review the different types of underground transmission cables covering High Pressure Fluid Filled (HPFF), High Pressure Gas Filled (HPGF), Extruded Cable, and Self-Contained Fluid Filled (SCFF)
  • Get more detailed in the system components of each type of cable by covering pipe types, HPFF components, duct banks, cables, splice joints, and terminations
  • Go in-depth and review the different transmission splicing tools and equipment used
  • Explore the different types of prints and drawings used in cable splicing
  • Describe HPFF cable preparation and splicing covering: cable faults, fault locating, pipe preparations, cable pulling operation, and splicing
  • Review solid dielectric preparation and splicing with cable pulling, splice preparations, and splicing
  • Detail termination preparation and splicing with cable pulling, splice preparations, and splicing

Instructor

John Cronin, Transmission/ Distribution Splicing Instructor and Consultant

John Cronin has been working in the electric utility industry in various capacities for over 20 yrs. He is currently a Splicing Instructor for one of the largest Utility Companies in the Northeast, where he instructs individuals from entry level positions to well-rounded field mechanics. John specializes in low, medium and high voltage Underground Splicing and has a passion to share his knowledge, skills and experience with others in the industry. In 2003 he began an apprenticeship in Underground Transmission and worked his way up to a Journeymen Cable Splicer. He has extensive experience in new installations and maintenance of Underground Transmission systems. In 2016 he took on the role of Underground splicing instructor at the Training facility.

Online Delivery

We will be using Microsoft Teams to facilitate your participation in the upcoming event. You do not need to have an existing Teams account in order to participate in the broadcast – the course will play in your browser and you will have the option of using a microphone to speak with the room and ask questions, or type any questions in via the chat window and our on-site representative will relay your question to the instructor.

  • You will receive a meeting invitation will include a link to join the meeting.
  • Separate meeting invitations will be sent for the morning and afternoon sessions of the course.
    • You will need to join the appropriate meeting at the appropriate time.
  • If you are using a microphone, please ensure that it is muted until such time as you need to ask a question.
  • The remote meeting connection will be open approximately 30 minutes before the start of the course. We encourage you to connect as early as possible in case you experience any unforeseen problems.

Cancellation Policy

Your registration may be transferred to a member of your organization up to 24 hours in advance of the event. Cancellations must be received on or before June 19, 2020 in order to be refunded and will be subject to a US $195.00 processing fee per registrant. No refunds will be made after this date. Cancellations received after this date will create a credit of the tuition (less processing fee) good toward any other EUCI event. This credit will be good for six months from the cancellation date. In the event of non-attendance, all registration fees will be forfeited. In case of conference cancellation, EUCIs liability is limited to refund of the event registration fee only.
