Overview

The era of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) pilot projects is over. Renewables and DERs are now growing at such a rapid pace that utilities need to be thinking ahead of this transition. The traditional power system engineering paradigm is turned upside-down: causing us to rethink the relationship of transmission and distribution and the frequency by which load is managed.

The transition occurring in today’s energy market to a sustainable grid creates some important questions: How can utilities stay ahead of the DER revolution where assets are marketed and commissioned by third-party companies on their service territory? How can grid operators keep OT systems in synch with how these devices evolve over time, from both their technical and contractual attributes? How can utilities model, visualize, monitor and, ultimately control these DER devices which do not belong to them? How can owners and operators arbitrate the conflicting objectives, at any moment in time, between Transmission, Distribution, and the prosumer, about how renewables and DERs should be dispatched or scheduled? Speakers

 Frédéric Wauquiez, Solution Director, Renewables and DER Orchestration – GE Digital Energy (Moderator)

Frédéric (Fred) Wauquiez is Senior Product Manager for Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) Orchestration within GE Renewable Energy Grid Software Solutions. He is in charge of strategy, roadmap definition and execution for GE’s DER Orchestration solution, designed to help utilities turn the DER disruption from a threat to an opportunity, spanning from geospatial and planning to distribution and transmission grid operations. Previously, Frédéric led the operational and financial setup of innovative Smart Grid pilot projects for utilities globally. He led the packaging, marketing and selling of Smart Grid solutions resulting from these projects.

Frédéric is part of CIGRE study committee C6 on Active Distribution Networks and Distributed Energy Resources, and a member of CIRED French National Committee.

Frédéric has over nineteen years of experience in international B2B Business Development. A power solution and service line that he co-founded for telecom networks in areas with poor electricity supply received European Commission’s Sustainable Energy Europe prize in 2010.

Frédéric graduated as an engineer from SUPAERO, leading French aerospace engineering school, and has a degree in Entrepreneurship from ESCP Europe Business School.


Diogo Lopes, Operational Reporting and Data Management – EDP

Diogo is the head of the operational data and reporting division at EDP Distribuição, the Distribution System Operator in Portugal. He is currently working on subjects like data analytics to lower risk on asset operations, operational shifts optimization, proactive fault detection on low voltage through smart grids, microgrids, and low voltage proactive troubleshoot.


Ranko Stojakovic, Manager, Network Operations Center – Stedin

Ranko Stojakovic has an extensive background in IT and has been working in the utility sector since 2004. Currently, he is working as Head of Grid Operations at Stedin, a Dutch urban DSO, where he is responsible for the day-to-day operation and monitoring of the energy system. Ranko also represents Stedin in several national taskforces related to outage management and grid resilience. With his passion for innovation, sustainability and IT, he helps Stedin achieve operational excellence in topics such as integrated network operations, IT-OT integration, outage management and advanced analytics.


Yi Li, Supervising Engineer—PPL

Yi Li received her BSEE and MSEE from Drexel University in 2013 with a focus in Power System Analysis and Distribution System Reconfiguration. She also has a research background in Power Electronics and control systems. She joined DMS Project team at PPL in 2013 and has served engineering support and lead roles on multiple smart grid projects. She is now the Lead Architect for DERMS on PPL’s Keystone project.

Jonathan O’Sullivan, Transmission System Operator, EirGrid

Jonathan O’Sullivan has spent over 20 years working in the electricity industry in the planning, operation and markets design.   In this time he has developed an acknowledged expertise in the theoretical modelling of the system, the necessary practical operation practices and the requirements for a well-designed and functional market.  In recent years Jonathan has been central to the implementation of the first electricity market in Ireland in 2000, the first all island market in 2007, the development of the “Delivering a Secure sustainable power system” (DS3) programme which will deliver the secure and reliable operation of the Ireland and Northern Ireland power system with unprecedented levels of wind electricity by 2020.

His current role in EirGrid, the transmission system operator in Ireland and Northern Ireland, is Manager Innovation.  Through this Jonathan drives general innovation in the group as well as specific technology strategies which include DS3, distributed power flow control devices, solar and storage.  To do this Jonathan’s team need to consider the future needs of the power system and envisage how these multiple technology strategies may interact at scale.  These considerations require technical, economic and government policy considerations.

Jonathan is an active member of ENTSO-E, the European association of TSO, where he contributes to working groups and committees on innovation, research, markets and renewables, long term market design and TSO-DSO interaction.
