This training program is designed for Risk Managers and others concerned with managing risk and insurance for the power generation industry and will provide a basic understanding of Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) principles which can be applied to support risk management strategies and the optimization of insurance programs.  Attendees will learn to recognize how effective risk management processes can extend the life and health of facilities across power generation organizations. They will learn their role with regards to risk identification, assessment, monitoring, and reporting through discussions about key risks, controls and risk assessment treatment plans. The training is designed for professionals who are looking to generate support at all levels of the organization for implementing ERM for power generation and will cover strategies for bridging and transforming current risk management practices into a robust and sustainable ERM framework.

The training will include exercises and case studies to achieve a practical understanding of how ERM is implemented and managed in the area of power generation.

Every organization develops short- and long-term objectives. Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) is about identifying the uncertainties and challenges that could inhibit your business’s success – then determining how to allocate resources to make sure those challenges are addressed and your business achieves its strategic targets. As organizations grow, it becomes increasingly difficult for management teams and boards to provide and demonstrate risk oversight over the organization’s key risks and controls. This course will provide attendees with an overview of ERM principles and best practices, and how ERM can be applied to support power generation operations in more effectively manage risk across its organization.

Jerry Chien, Eastern Canada Leader Risk Solutions, Aon Risk Solutions

Jerry Chien is an enterprise risk management and insurance professional with 20+ years of broad leadership and consulting experience. 

He has successfully implemented enterprise risk management frameworks / programs within two complex fast growing multi-national publicly traded companies from ground zero (D+H – Banking & Technology; and AQN – Power Generation & Utilities). In both roles he presented to the Board on a quarterly basis; chaired executive risk committee meetings; facilitated risk and control assessments/audits across business units; and developed ERM policies, procedures and tools in alignment with best practices and the organization’s risk appetite.

In 2016, AQN’s ERM program was recognized by the Risk and Insurance Management Society (RIMS) for achieving “Advanced Leadership in ERM”. 

Prior to his roles with D+H and AQN, he spent 11 years with AON providing ERM and risk management consulting to over 100+ organizations across a wide range of industries including: Banking/Insurance / Energy / I.T. / Food / Pharma / Mining / Forestry / Mfg. / Government / Real Estate / Retail. He was responsible for launching and leading AON’s ERM consulting practice in Canada and was part of AON’s global ERM leadership team. 

At D+H and AQN, he effectively restructured and managed the corporate property & casualty insurance portfolios for both of these organizations generating $10+ million in insurance premium savings and recovering $35+ million in insurance claims. At AQN, he developed and launched a captive insurance company with a innovative product line to manage earnings volatility risk due to adverse weather conditions. 

During his years with AON Jerry was a licensed commercial insurance broker for 10 years (BC – Level 2 License and ON – RIBO) and helped a wide range of clients build, optimize, and effectively manage their insurance programs.
