Carbon Capture, Utilization & Storage Forum

Carbon Capture Utilization & Storage Summit

Accelerating Net-Zero Emissions with CCUS

May 17-18, 2023 | Online :: Central Time

Carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) is an evolving global topic as countries strive to reduce CO2 emissions in order to meet net zero goals.  However, CCUS systems continue to be underutilized and underdeveloped.

The Carbon Capture, Storage & Utilization Conference will address the latest technologies for removing CO2 from the atmosphere – including direct air capture, and bioenergy projects. With advancements in CCUS, multiple forces are now combining to make large scale investment in carbon capture commercially viable. Yet there are significant questions about what business models will be viable.

Register now for this unique opportunity to hear from pre-eminent CCUS professionals. You’ll leave the conference with strategies for the deployment and commercialization of carbon capture, utilization, and storage projects.

Learning Outcomes

This virtual forum will provide attendees an opportunity to:

  • Examine how CCUS can contribute to net-zero emissions
  • Review details of the Section 45Q tax credit
  • Identify whether and how primacy will expedite the energy transition to a net-zero energy economy
  • Develop strategies for creating a circular carbon economy
  • Hear the latest details on three U.S. Carbon Capture projects
  • Discover the legal underpinnings that frame risk, uncertainty, and investment in CO2 utilization and storage infrastructure and projects

9:00 – 9:05 a.m. :: Welcome Message

9:05 – 10:00 a.m. :: CCUS Opportunities & Incentives

In this session attendees will get a detailed overview from the Department of Energy (DOE), including the latest on Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill (BIL) opportunities and Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) incentives that will support the deployment of CCUS technologies.

Noah Deich, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Carbon Management, U.S. Department of Energy

10:00 -10:15 a.m. :: Morning Break

10:15 – 11:30 a.m. :: Federal Section 45Q Tax Credits

The Inflation Reduction Act provides tax incentives for carbon capture including increased credits for geologic sequestration, new credits for direct air capture and a lower threshold for project eligibility. It also moves back the construction date start for qualifying CCUS projects. This session will detail how the latest round of federal incentives can help make CCUS technology and project development economically viable.

  • Improved 45Q Tax Credits in the IRA
  • State Primacy changes for permitting CO2
  • Improved 3rd party business models and long-term liability

Dr. Richard Esposito, R&D Program Manager, Geosciences & Carbon Management, Southern Company

11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. :: Lunch Break

12:30 – 1:30 p.m. :: Creating a Circular Carbon Economy

Industries, government agencies and consumers are looking for sustainable solutions and ways to create a circular carbon economy. The urgency of the climate crisis has put us on the edge of a new industrial era where waste carbon will be the feedstock and clean electricity the energy source to produce materials that are currently made from fossil fuels, harnessing the basis of the climate crisis as a critical climate solution. In this session, attendees will get an overview of new technologies to convert industrial gases to sustainable fuels and chemicals.

Tom Dower, VP Public Policy, LanzaTech

1:30 – 1:45 p.m. :: Afternoon Break

1:45 -3:30 p.m. :: Case Study: Secure Storage

This session will provide a complete look at subsurface site attributes for secure storage.  There are several lessons we have learned from extensive site disposal experience associated with water disposal from the thousands of horizontal wells in the Permian Basin and SW U.S.  These lessons are directly related to large volume storage of CO2.

Steve Melzer, Founder, Melzer Consulting; Former President, Applied Petroleum Technology Academy

3:30 – 4:15 p.m. :: Regulatory and Permitting Updates

  • The permitting of a CCUS project is complex and may require a combination of federal, state, and local permits or authorizations. This discussion will include an overview of permitting needs along with a deeper dive into storage regulations: Advancements in legal access to pore space for CO2 storage with private, federal, and state ownership interests
  • Development of offshore CO2 storage regulations

Marcella Burke, Environmental Law Attorney; Board Member, Energy ESG Council

4:15 – 5:00 p.m. :: The Case for CCUS Hubs and Clusters

Hubs and clusters significantly reduce the unit cost of CO2 storage through economies of scale in transport and storage infrastructure, while also offering stakeholder engagement and commercial synergies to underpin investment and support. This session will walk through a case study calculating the economic benefits of a hub in the Gulf Coast

Valeria Di Filippo, CCUS Advisor, Baker Hughes

9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Conference Timing

9:00 – 10:00 a.m. :: CO2 Capture, Transportation and Storage

This discussion will highlight the most promising technologies for carbon capture, transportation, utilization, and storage across the value chain, including:

  • Point-source, Carbon Capture & Sequestration
  • CO2 Dehydration and Compression
  • CO2 Pipeline and Storage
  • CO2 utilization technologies

Algert Prifti, CCUS Solutions Portfolio Manager, Black & Veatch

10:00 – 10:15 a.m. :: Morning Break

10:15 – 11:00 a.m. :: CCUS and Clean Hydrogen

One of the major sources of clean hydrogen will be natural gas using steam or auto thermal reforming which requires effective carbon capture and sequestration to qualify as clean. This makes clean hydrogen a driver of CCUS and sets up the opportunity for synergistic clean hydrogen hubs and CCUS hubs. This session will include an overview of planned hub projects.

Mike Hopkins, Chief Executive Officer, Bakken Energy

11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. :: Turning Carbon into Value

After multiple decades of demonstrating the scaling CCUS technology multiple forces are now combining to make large scale investment in CCUS commercially viable. Yet as CCUS emerges as a new asset investment class there are significant questions about what business models will be viable and how companies can play in this space. This session will focus on how the business opportunity for CCUS is developing and what will shape the commercial landscape going forward.

Joseph Thom, Director, Renewable Energy & Environmental Finance, Wells Fargo
