Electric Distribution Three-Phase Overcurrent Protection

Electric Distribution Three-Phase Overcurrent Protection

April 10-11, 2024 | Online :: Central Time

The Electric Distribution Three-Phase Overcurrent Protection course provides attendees with a review of Symmetrical Components and moves to Fault Current Calculations using the Per Unit Method.

Attendees will gain a wealth of information including:

  • Design options of Three-Phase Reclosers and Circuit Breakers
  • Ground fault protection and other protection schemes
  • Circuit breakers, three-phase reclosers, IntelliRupter
  • Coordination of overcurrent protective devices
  • Padmount switchgear design options

The training is focused on the technical engineering protection issues, not any specific manufacturer’s equipment or device and will utilize practical examples to enforce the classroom concepts.

We recommend attendees bring an engineering calculator to class.

Learning Outcomes

  • Discuss calculation of fault currents using the Per Unit method
  • Review circuit breakers, three-phase reclosers, IntelliRupter
  • Discuss protective relays
  • Discuss the coordination of overcurrent protective devices
  • Review self-healing systems
  • Assess padmount switchgear design options

Martin T. Bishop, Sr. Consulting Engineer, S&C

Martin T. Bishop (IEEE Member 1978, Senior Member 1988) received a BS and ME in EPE from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY. He also completed an MBA at the Keller Graduate School of Management. His first position was with Westinghouse in Pittsburgh, PA in the Advanced Systems Technology division. He was the lead engineer on a project to develop new protection systems to detect fallen distribution conductors. Marty worked for 20 years in the Systems Engineering department at Cooper Power Systems where he supervised a group that performed industrial studies, power quality measurements and designed filter systems for large industrial plants. He also participated in the development and application of new relay protection systems using Rogowski coil current sensors. The work developed and applied the first differential protection systems for electric arc furnace transformers. In 2010, he joined S&C as a Sr. Marketing Manager within the Strategic Solutions Business Unit. His group focused on power system applications of STATCOM systems for renewable plants and general power quality applications. He is presently a principal engineer in the Feeder Automation product management group.

Jerry Josken, Senior Consultant and Instructor, EUCI

Jerry holds a BS in Electrical Engineering Technology from the Milwaukee School of Engineering and an MBA from North Central College. During his 30+ year career with Eaton Power Systems, Jerry served in a variety of engineering capacities. Past leadership positions include Chair of IEEE Rural Electric Power Conference (2012) and GLEMS Distribution Equipment/Controls (2013-2014). Currently, Jerry develops and conducts professional development programs on various power delivery topics for EUCI.
