Distribution Volt/VAR Management

Distribution Volt/VAR Management

April 11-12, 2023 | Online :: Central Time

“This event was a great introduction into configuring capacitors and voltage regulators to meet the various voltage and power factor needs of a distribution system while offering safe and reliable performance.” Planning Engineer, Tri-State Transmission & Generation

Losses associated with power distribution add significantly to the day-to-day operating cost. Controlling losses is even more critical for non-generating utilities who pay a new demand charge when they exceed the previous peak. Reducing losses also improves the quality of power to consumers in that voltage drop is minimized.

Attendees of this course will learn characteristics and application factors of Power Capacitors and Step Voltage Regulators in order to successfully create a Volt/VAR strategy for their organization to mitigate these losses and lower operating costs.

Learning Outcomes

  • Define the Impedance Triangle’s components of resistance, reactance, and impedance
  • Define the Power Triangle’s components of reactive, active, and apparent power
  • Calculate system losses and identify contributing factors
  • Interpret voltage profile plots
  • Differentiate Volt/VAR strategies
  • Define characteristics and application factors for power capacitors
  • Evaluate power capacitor overcurrent protection options
  • Identify the characteristics and application factors of step voltage regulators
  • List voltage regulator controls setting
  • Contrast strategies for coordinating Volt/VAR equipment
