Energy industry leaders must guide their enterprises to maximize value in an increasingly complex global and evolving marketplace. The Oil & Gas sector has long been a global marketplace, and utilities and renewables sectors are becoming increasingly international. Across all categories, workplaces are becoming more and more culturally diverse. Employees who work across cultures and in a multicultural workplace are key players who will determine the success of your company’s strategies. Success requires cultural intelligence and the agility and ability to leverage that knowledge to work effectively with diverse people and cultures. Business inefficiencies and disruptions often result from cross-cultural misunderstandings as well as differences in perceptions and expectations. This creates a lack of trust and mutual respect, reduced productivity, and diminished effectiveness.

This program is designed to enhance the effectiveness of all employees, managers and team members who work with people from other cultures.  This includes working with partners, suppliers and co-workers based outside the US as well as those in the US from other cultures.  Anyone who communicates with people from other cultures, whether in-person or virtually, needs to understand how cultural differences in social customs and business practices can impact performance.  During this course we will utilize small group discussions, case studies, simulations, videos of actual cases, structured experiences and short presentations to help each participant develop an action plan for effective working relationships across cultures.

Program Features:

  • A state-of-the-art on-line self-assessment tool which will allow each participant to compare their preferred management, communication, and negotiation styles to that of other cultures and learn how to design appropriate strategies for interacting with their targeted countries. This on-line tool can be provided to the participants in advance of the program to expedite their learning in class.
  • Active learning such as simulated cross-cultural encounters and work-related case studies which help the participants experience what they are learning.
  • Personal and organizational action planning which allows the participants to focus on the application of the learning from the very beginning of the program through its conclusion and beyond.

Special emphasis during the program will be given to developing insight into cultural attitudes and values and adapting to the norms of other cultures; practicing virtual communications skills; and exploring “taboos” and “blind spots” when interacting with business partners from different cultural backgrounds. Attend this course to develop the important skills necessary for productive working relationships and collaboration across cultures.

Learning Outcomes:

This course will provide attendees an opportunity to:

  • Develop appropriate strategies for dealing with cultural differences in business customs, social protocols, values, and management, negotiation, and leadership styles
  • Enhance techniques to effectively participate in or lead international teams
  • Discover how to strengthen relationships, establish mutual respect and build trust by increasing understanding and appreciation of cultural differences
  • Identify specific situations where misunderstandings are likely to occur and develop appropriate response strategies
  • Utilize case studies of actual international business activities to improve performance
  • Develop personal and organizational action plans for effective intercultural interaction in the multicultural/global workplace
  • Apply Cultural Intelligence (CIQ) to ongoing and new projects
  • Improve communication with people from other cultures by learning methods to overcome language barriers, understanding non-verbal communication, and examining protocols for phone and email
  • Cultural do’s and taboos of international business practices
  • Discuss culturally appropriate strategies for enhancing team working effectiveness



EUCI has been accredited as an Authorized Provider by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET).  In obtaining this accreditation, EUCI has demonstrated that it  complies with the ANSI/IACET Standard which is recognized internationally as a standard of good practice. As a result of their Authorized Provider status, EUCI is authorized to offer IACET CEUs for its programs that qualify under the ANSI/IACET Standard.

EUCI is authorized by IACET to offer 0.6 CEUs for this event.


Requirements for Successful Completion of Program

Participants must log in and be in attendance for the entirety of the course to be eligible for continuing education credit.

    • Global companies must contend with the new and changing realities of a global world. This simulation places the participants in situations where they experience the shock of realizing that, despite many similarities, people from differing backgrounds have differences in the way they do things. Players learn that they must understand and reconcile these differences if they want to function effectively in a cross-cultural group.
    • Participants will engage in group discussions examining how to cope with ambiguities.

  • WHY CULTURAL INTELLIGENCE IS CRITICAL TO GLOBAL SUCCESS:  Culture and its Impact on Business Relationships

    • This module will examine the business case for Cultural Intelligence. A mutual perceptions exercise will help the participants appreciate how they are perceived by others.

  • PRACTICING SPECIFIC SKILLS TO DEVELOP CULTURAL INTELLIGENCE: Contrasting Styles of Doing Business Around the World

    • Each participant will fill out a self-assessment instrument, which will identify his or her preferred style of doing business. The participants will then be able to contrast their style with those of targeted countries where they do business.  The proprietary GDI Cultural Tendencies Grid and Desk Top Learning Tool will be utilized and provided to each participant for continued future reference.
    • Following these comparisons, the participants will engage in a small group exercise where they will be able to develop strategies for working across cultures, based upon the findings of the study. 
      • Specific applications will target:
          • Hierarchy and Status
          • Decision Making
          • Team vs. Individual
          • Managing and Motivating
          • Risk Orientation
          • The Cultural Tendencies Continuum
          • Developing Effective Personal Techniques
    • Small group exercises will develop strategies for enhancing international team working skills and collaboration.

  • COMMUNICATING WITH OTHER CULTURES:  Simulation and Best Practices

    • Discuss the key differences in communication styles among cultures, including a practice of how to overcome the barriers caused when people with different linguistic backgrounds try to communicate with each other.
    • A simulation will identify the challenges when communicating across cultures and highlight the practical and emotional responses people experience when communicating across the linguistic divide.
    • Participants will develop specific strategies for overcoming these challenges, including:
        • Examination of Verbal and Non-Verbal Communication Differences
        • Examination of Direct vs. Indirect Communication Styles
        • Communicating with Superiors, Subordinates and Colleagues
        • Asking Questions and Getting/Giving Answers
        • Best Practices in Working Across Time Zones
        • Best Practices in Virtual Communications: Email, Conference/ Video Calls and more

  • PUTTING YOUR PLAN INTO ACTION:  Developing a Personal, Team and Organizational Action Plan for Successful Global and Multicultural Excellence

    • Participants will share and discuss their insights on the learned skills through their action plans for creating positive multicultural effectiveness. They will learn steps to ensure application of action plans in their workplaces.

We will be using Microsoft Teams to facilitate your participation in the upcoming event. Cancellation Policy

Your registration may be transferred to a member of your organization up to 24 hours in advance of the event. Cancellations must be received on or before March 26, 2021 in order to be refunded and will be subject to a US $195.00 processing fee per registrant. No refunds will be made after this date. Cancellations received after this date will create a credit of the tuition (less processing fee) good toward any other EUCI event. This credit will be good for six months from the cancellation date. In the event of non-attendance, all registration fees will be forfeited. In case of conference cancellation, EUCIs liability is limited to refund of the event registration fee only.
