Rail Asset Management in the Digital Age

Rail Asset Management in the Digital Age

March 19-20, 2024 | Online :: Central Time

Railway is a complex system-of-systems with thousands of assets spread across a large area. As railway operators seek to improve reliability, availability, safety, and environmental sustainability of their systems through expansion and modernization, asset management provides a structured and systematic approach to balance performance, risks and whole-life costs.

The digital transformation of railways driven by artificial Intelligence (AI) and related technologies has created new opportunities and challenges which impact the effectiveness and efficiency of asset management strategies. This is particularly relevant for rail operators who need to consider multiple, and often competing, priorities of:

  • Safety
  • Climate resilience
  • Digitalization
  • Cybersecurity
  • Financial stewardship
  • Regulatory compliance
  • Customer expectations
  • Workforce management, and much more

The Rail Asset Management in the Digital Age course is designed to provide a basic understanding of rail asset management concepts, principles, processes, and best practices; and to prepare professionals to plan, implement, and lead rail operations, maintenance, and capital projects by successfully leveraging asset management techniques.

Learning Outcomes

  • Define asset management terminology, definitions, and principles
  • Conceptualize, develop and lead asset management projects to optimize rail operations and maintenance
  • Manage the expectations of stakeholders with respect to asset management
  • Discuss how to use data and analytics for decision making and investment prioritization
  • Develop business case using lifecycle cost models to secure executive approval and funding for rail projects
  • Gain insight into structured approaches such as reliability-centered maintenance and lifecycle costing to realize greater value from assets
  • Explore strategies to manage resources efficiently to deliver capital projects such as modernization and capacity expansion on schedule and under budget
  • Benefit from sharing of best practices in rail asset management
  • Collaborate and network in online workshops and break rooms
