Business Essentials for Geographic Information Systems

In most utilities, the corporate geographic information system (GIS) is an integral resource in maintaining critical information about company assets and infrastructure. Typically, a “new” GIS is built and implemented only to be managed or self-managed with no concrete vision. This session will provide some insight in how to manage the critical IT infrastructure system to ensure a return on the investment, provide ideas for maintaining and growing the GIS application and data, and discuss the pitfalls and challenges of managing and maintaining the GIS system. In the end, participants will be challenged to create a road map framework for their GIS application and users to enhance and promote the GIS system at their organization.
This session is targeted at GIS leads, supervisors, managers, or anyone who wants to ensure the ongoing viability of the GIS application and associated data.
- Identify your GIS status and structure and understand which questions to ask regarding those factors
- Discuss how to establish business ownership and organizational structure
- Explain how to execute short- and long-term goals based on your business plan
- Review how to support the business plan through training development, implementation, risks and pitfalls, ROI, and more
- Determine the vision focus and how to bring the business plan success and completion

In obtaining this accreditation, EUCI has demonstrated that it complies with the ANSI/IACET Standard which is recognized internationally as a standard of good practice. Chuck Legg, Professional Engineer, Province of Ontario
Chuck’s career spanned 37 years in the natural gas industry at a natural gas storage, transmission, and distribution company in Ontario, Canada. His experience included various Engineering, Operations, and GIS roles within the Utility, and he was the Project Lead for a corporate-wide GIS Replacement Program and subsequently managed the Corporate GIS system. His experience also includes field operations, engineering design, system planning, and engineering standards.
During his career he also spent time mentoring and training new Engineers. He was also involved in various industry committees and organizations and presented at industry conferences during his career. Chuck graduated with a BSc in Civil Engineering from the University of Waterloo. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario and a current member of GITA.
We will be using Microsoft Teams to facilitate your participation in the upcoming event. You do not need to have an existing Teams account in order to participate in the broadcast – the course will play in your browser and you will have the option of using a microphone to speak with the room and ask questions, or type any questions in via the chat window and our on-site representative will relay your question to the instructor.

Your registration may be transferred to a member of your organization up to 24 hours in advance of the event. Cancellations must be received on or before January 15, 2021 in order to be refunded and will be subject to a US $195.00 processing fee per registrant. No refunds will be made after this date. Cancellations received after this date will create a credit of the tuition (less processing fee) good toward any other EUCI event. This credit will be good for six months from the cancellation date. In the event of non-attendance, all registration fees will be forfeited. In case of conference cancellation, EUCIs liability is limited to refund of the event registration fee only.
