Overview

There are many practical purposes for implementing green infrastructure including increased stormwater control, enhanced energy efficiency, and improved water, soil, and air quality. Additionally, green infrastructure beautifies landscapes and reduces heat stress in urban environments, hosting several long-term benefits at a relatively low cost.

This course will be led by Brian Wethington, Green Infrastructure Project Manager, City of Denver and Tom Liptan, Green Infrastructure Consultant, LIVE Center and will provide a comprehensive overview of green infrastructure terminology, planning and site selection, design, modeling, construction, maintenance, and monitoring while providing a number of real world examples and looking at the barriers and solutions to green infrastructure implementation in your region.

Learning Objectives

  • Define green infrastructure and associated terminology clearly

  • Define the different types of green infrastructure systems and how they treat stormwater

Instructors

Brian Wethington, Green Infrastructure Project Manager, City and County of Denver

Brian is the Green Infrastructure Project Manager for the City and County of Denver and responsible for the technical implementation of the green infrastructure strategies developed by the Department of Transportation & Infrastructure.  He provides initial project management for the development and design of pilot projects identified through green infrastructure planning as well as technical assistance for other city agencies and professional consultants that are working to include site scale green infrastructure on their projects.  Prior to working for the City of Denver, Brian worked for the Bureau of Environmental Services in Portland, Oregon and in private practice as a Landscape Architect.  He has worked for more than 25 years on the integration of sustainable stormwater practices in the urban environment as both a designer and as public servant.


Dave Elkin, Principal, Juncos Studios

Dave is the owner and founder of Juncus Studio. Dave has spent his career designing projects that embed natural systems within our urban fabric. From restoring wetlands, designing green streets and green roofs, to gaining public access to one of the largest waterfalls in the United States, his work spans a range of scales and typologies.
