Can We Meet Western Renewable Portfolio Standards?

Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS) across 35 states are creating strong market demand for renewable energy. The Western Renewable Energy Zones (WREZ) study has concluded that the Western US has sufficient renewable energy resource potential to meet all Western RPS requirements multiple times over. Yet where these resources will be developed, whether they will be generated locally or transported across state lines, and what this infrastructure will cost remains in question.

The California Renewable Energy Transmission Initiative (RETI) is investigating the delivered cost and value to California utilities of renewable energy resources across the West in order to prioritize transmission lines for permitting and development. The results of this study provide insights into where renewable energy might be built across the West, in what quantities, and what it will cost utilities and ratepayers over the next decade. Furthermore, the study provides insight and analysis into recent shifts in the costs of utility scale renewable energy technologies.

Join us as three key contributors to the WREZ and RETI projects discuss the magnitude, location, and quality of available renewable energy resources, potential generation and transmission development scenarios, and estimates of the costs of each of these scenarios to utilities and ratepayers in the West.

Who Should Attend

  • Consultants, lawyers and finance professionals
  • Lenders and potential investors in renewable energy resources
  • Independent power producers
  • Long term energy planners
  • PUC staff and commissioners
  • NGO's and green advocacy groups looking to foster renewable adoption
  • Government staff responsible for green program strategy and planning
  • Renewable and clean-tech project developers

Learning Outcomes

  • Analyze and distinguish recent changes in renewable energy technologies and economics
  • Identify the availability of renewable energy resources in the Western US with respect to state level RPS requirements
  • Distinguish and explain the differences between the delivered costs of renewable resource options available to electric utilities in the Western US
