Significant steps are underway towards the modernization of the power transmission and distribution system. These changes will create an intelligent electricity infrastructure through smart meter implementation and distribution system automation initiatives that provide concrete steps towards the future smart grid, one which is efficient, intelligent, and robust. The term smart grid keeps coming up, from politicians to technology providers. The potential of a smart grid is enormous with touted benefits that include increased reliability, decreased emissions, and greater consumer control.
